Lyft is the taxi-like service that lets any person use their own car to make extra money driving people around. Zipcar is the car club that lets you pay an hourly rate to rent a car. What if Zipcar bought Lyft and launched a new service called ZipLyft? This new service would allow Zipcar to monetize unused cars by offering people the ability to become Lyft drivers and earn extra money by using Zipcars. Everyone wins! Zipcar makes incremental revenue from unused vehicles, Lyft grows their driver base, and people make extra money while increasing Lyft car availability.
What do you think? Would you be a ZipLyft driver?
Steps:
1) Built basic website – www.snackflix.com
2) Surveyed over 200 people
3) Iterated website, added a CTA (“signup”) to determine interest, and launched publicly
4) Ran $200 worth of Facebook ads
5) Analyzed results
Conclusion: The cost to acquire users from the test Facebook campaign was higher than our internal LTV projections

23 May 2012Your task is to find the one additional word that goes with the following triad of words:
Union Rabbit Cracker
(remember your answer and keep reading)
A brand-new study by scientists at the University of Illinois at Chicago compared performance on insight puzzles between sober and drunk students (B.A.C of 0.075). Once the students achieved “intoxication” the scientists gave them a group of word problems – they’re known as remote associate tests – that are often solved in a moment of insight. The three words listed above is an example.
If you answered “jack” then you are correct and… perhaps drunk? According to the data, drunk students solved more of these word problems in less time. And the differences were dramatic: The alcohol made subjects nearly 30 percent more likely to find the unexpected solution. The explanation for this can to attributed to the effect alcohol has on the brain. Alcohol makes your brain hazy and limits your ability to focus. It also makes it harder to ignore random thoughts and associations thus helping your imagination.
There is a similar study that shows sleepiness and grogginess have the same effect on the brain which also makes it harder for your mind to focus thus inducing more imaginative thoughts.
Now I have to wonder if all those startups that have fridges full of beer are doing this based on scientific reasoning or if they just got lucky by filling their break rooms with bottles of liquid creativity. Cheers! Prost! Solud!
Getting sick sucks! I can assure you that 100% of the people reading this blog post agree with that statement. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when and where exposure to sickness causing germs happens but it’s likely at the workplace since that’s where people spend the majority of their day time.
A survey conducted by Staples Advantage, the business-to-business arm of office products retailer Staples Inc., found 65 percent of employees are coming to work sick. Only 80 percent are cleaning their work areas once a week or less, making any work area a potential hot zone for germs.
A survey by The Commonwealth Fund, a private foundation working toward improvements in the U.S. health-care system, reports that an estimated 55 million U.S. workers annually experience reduced productivity due to illness. The study concluded that based on the responses, the workers were performing at half capacity, equaling a $260 billion economic value annually.
Now this is where ZapGerm comes in. Employers pay a monthly fee based on number of employees to get access to their own ZapGerm.com web portal and 1-800-Zap-Germ custom extension number which they share and setup for their employees. Whenever an employee is feeling sick (or they have a sick family member) they call or log into the ZapGerm portal and request a HealthBoost pack (paid for by employer) that is overnighted to their house and consists of special health remedies. On top of that the ZapGerm system notifies the janitorial staff and at night they use Saniguard sanitizer fogger which eliminates all germs (see video below). Employees can also anonymously tip off other employees who show signs of sickness who will get a notification and ask if they want the HealthBoost as well as the complete janitorial sanitation at night.
It’s a win-win! Employees are happy because they are exposed to fewer germs and get sick less and employers are happy because they get more productive workers and fewer people calling out sick.
ZapGerm is just a concept, but if it was real would you like to see this at your workplace?

Turntable.fm blew up overnight! It streams more than a million songs a day and has close to a million registered users. Not to mention the recent Facebook partnership that was announced at f8 and the $7mm funding round (more info here). With their success will now come clones, copycats, and turntable.fm for “blank” companies. The first of these have already hit the scene. Chill.com & JamCloud have already been called the “Turntable for video” and I’m sure more of these will launch shortly.
The Turntable.fm recipe for success:
1 part Facebook Integration
1 part Entertainment
1 part Avatar
1 part Community
1 part Gaming Mechanics
1 part User Generated Content
Here are a few ideas of sites that I think will emerge in the coming months:
Turntable for Reading
Turntable for Live Music
Turntable for Games
Turntable for Flash Sales
Turntable for Wall Street
Turntable for Podcasts
Turntable for Cable TV

17 Sep 2011I find myself bored these days watching cable TV. While I only watch cable once or twice a week, the experience isn’t very interactive and most of the time I’ve got a laptop or iPhone in my hand. Things are about to change…

Imagine playing a game on your iPhone/Android that interacts with the TV show you are watching.
Imagine watching a cooking show and with a click of a button the recipe prints and the grocery list appears on your phone.
Imagine facial recognition software on your iPhone that’s used as a child lock for you TV.
Imagine watching a TV commercial and clicking a button on your remote and your cell phone rings and connects you to the number on the screen.
Imagine channel surfing by using the motion sensors on your iPhone like shaking or tilting your phone.
Now stop imagining because this is a reality. Samsung just launched a new TV/Mobile App contest (www.freethetvchallenge.com) giving away $225K for the best new apps and WE are going to win! More details and links to come…

Earthquakes are shaking up the news right now. East coast, west coast, worldwide… everywhere. Are you ready for the next BIG quake?
Earthquake kits/packs are nothing new. They’ve been sold for decades and come with random things like batteries, light sticks, NASA space food, and more. I looked into them a few days ago and they sell for $40-$150 depending on what kind of earthquake pack you want and what you want in it. I thought to myself, is it worth dropping $50 bucks right now for it?
BOOM.. then I thought of the idea for EarthquakePacks.com. The idea is a simple e-commerce website where you can get an earthquake pack for as low as $4 a month for a single pack. Double packs and family packs cost more, but are still a very low monthly fee.
Do you think that more people would prepare themselves with earthquake packs if the cost to get one was only $4? Would you signup for EarthquakePacks.com?

Mmmmm… waffles, so tasty and so good. I love waffles but seem to never have them when I crave them most. Yea I could go to the store and buy them, but wouldn’t it be great if you could pay a small monthly fee and get the worlds best waffles delivered to your doorstep twice a monthly?
“Have no fear… WafflerHero is here!”
WaffleHero.com is a simple idea – $20 a month gets you the worlds best frozen waffles delivered to your door twice a month. Netflix revolutionized the movie rental industry and WaffleHero will do the same for the waffle industry. The frozen waffle industry is a $500+ million dollar per year industry (source) with Eggo waffles representing a whopping 73% market share (source). Similar to other SaaS models, WaffleHero is the first and only WaaS or Waffle-as-a-Service pricing model. The new service is sure to be a big hit with college students and waffles lovers all over the world.
So.. the question is, would you signup for the service?
